RUGBY LEAGUE DEFENDING champions Wigan overcame a major scare to secure a 26-16 victory in their game in hand that takes them top of Super League.

Despite being without 10 first-teamers through injury, Castleford outplayed their hosts for long periods of last night's re-arranged game and twice held the lead before crucially conceding three tries in a nine-minute spell early in the second half. The Warriors had all sorts of trouble coping with a wet ball and tricky opponents, who looked a shadow of the side that conceded 102 points in their previous two games.
