Shut off from the world by the surrounding moors, this dale and the village of the same name cling to the hillside that climbs to Glaisdale Moor.

In the valley bottom runs the Esk River on its way to the sea at Whitby and nearby are Arncliff woods. On one side of the valley stands the 1-in-3 Limber Hill, reached by a choice of bridges, including the well-known Beggars Bridge - a monument to Thomas Ferris who, in the early 17th century, either waded or swam across the river every time he wanted to see the squire's daughter.
