Although I am just as guilty as the rest, I do sometimes wonder when it was that shopping moved from necessity to the main leisure activity of these shores.

In just a couple of generations we have skipped from frowning at anything "wasteful" to the heady consumer levels of today. Even those who would consider themselves environmentally friendly, Fairtrade-embracing non-wastrels probably accumulate either way more than they should or more than would have been deemed appropriate by the generations before them.
