UK: Car giant General Motors raised hopes for the long-term future of Vauxhall factories in the UK last night, despite pressing ahead with plans to axe up to 10,000 jobs across Europe.

Nick Reilly, a senior official of the US car-maker, said he believed there was scope for a "significant reduction" in the 800 job cuts threatened earlier this year under earlier plans.
