Fred Astaire: immigrant, Fred 1 Howard Keel: The barrel-chested star of films including Seven Brides For Seven Brothers began his working life as a car mechanic. It was during a stint as a salesman at the Douglas Aircraft factory in Los Angeles that his singing voice was first noted. Invited to perform at entertainment events for the company's clients, he went on to become a singing waiter before being discovered by Hollywood.
