HIS passion for flowers began when he was an 11-year-old schoolboy. Five decades on, Dennis Shaw's love of gardening led to an invitation to dine with the Queen. But Dennis, 78, nearly gave up horticulture at an early stage.

"I left school when I was 14, went to the dole office and told them I wanted to be a gardener," he says. "They said they had a job for me at a sheltered housing block.
