BUSINESSES generally recognise the Chancellor has little room to manoeuvre in delivering his autumn statement. However, there's no doubt one of the best ways to stimulate growth and activity in the economy is through construction, and we hope to see measures to encourage that industry.

One opportunity arises through Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT), which is payable on the purchase or transfer of property or land. There are rumours within the property sector that tax relief applied to SDLT for disadvantaged areas is to be removed. As the criteria for selecting those areas don't always make sense, such a move may be a welcome simplification, if it is accompanied by other changes.
