Figures show stressed midwives accounted for more than half of staff absenteeism at the Jubilee Birth Centre in Cottingham last year. Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust closed the centre in July following a spot-check by the Care Quality Commission.

That highlighted a lack of choice for mothers due to staff shortages.
