The first real insight I had into the biking community happened at the Hull ferry terminal. It was July 4 and my brother and I were waiting to board the ferry to Zeebrugge ahead of the motorbiking trip around Europe you may have read about in Motors a few weeks ago.

The benefits of being on a bike were immediately obvious. As the cars formed a long queue which, from a distance resembled a weary metal caterpillar, we were waved on by terminal staff right to the front.
