FIFTY-five years ago, in the days when the area boasted 26 dance bands, 30 cinemas, 34 chimney sweeps, 20 coal merchants,15 blacksmiths and two custard manufacturers, someone on the staff of the city's Telephones Department had a bright idea.

They suggested the classified section, which was part of the telephone directory, should be printed as "golden pages".
